To be fair, there of echoes of many other more edifying sources-“An Affair to Remember,” “ Pretty Woman,” the French import “ The Intouchables”-that reverberate through this “ Beauty and the Beast” fantasy as it unfolds in a quaint English village. We all should be thankful-save, perhaps, those who voted her Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive last year-that Clarke turned down starring in “Fifty Shades of Grey” (too much nudity) and waited for this opportunity. She even has a unique secret weapon: A set of incredible dancing eyebrows that appear to be under the spell of a snake charmer. Instead, she proved all too capable of being as forgettable as anything else in last summer’s “ Terminator Genisys” as the young Sarah Connor.īut only those who are allergic to adorable clumsiness and dewy-eyed sincerity will be able to resist Clarke as Louisa, a sheltered small-town girl with a big personality, too few ambitions and deep concerns for her family’s economic welfare. But she hasn’t quite broken through on the big screen yet. Of course, “Game of Thrones” devotees have long been bowing down before this British actress and her impressive display of bewitching bad-assery as the silver-haired dragon-keeper Daenerys Targaryen. So much so, it might put you in mind of when you first witnessed the blinding incandescence of Julia Roberts' widescreen-ready smile or the delicate allure of Keira Knightley’s cameo-locket features. Emilia Clarke’s performance is winningly immersed in charming gawkiness and heartfelt sincerity while sporting a deliriously kitschy wardrobe heavy on eye-popping primary colors and loud butterfly prints.
In a landscape where The Theory of Everything and My Left Foot are greenlit only to win Oscar gold, a small tale of love between two disparate people is one small step (pun totally intended).Luckily, many of the plot’s maudlin pitfalls are greatly mitigated by the film’s utterly infectious leading lady. I’ll give the film some credit: Though it’s marketed as a three-hankie weepy, it’s one of the more successful disabled films from a money-making standpoint. I’m told too often that I should appreciate disabled stories because they’re being told. Me Before You is the ultimate able-bodied fantasy, and it’s painful that with all our talk of diversity disabled films are still woefully stereotypical. Yes, in 2016 we’re told it’s so horrible to be a good-looking English guy with disposable income who just happens to use a wheelchair! Claflin’s character checks off the requisite disabled boxes: good-looking but highly bitter, has an impending expiration date. As a disabled person myself I still can’t get over the stereotypical portrayal of a person in a wheelchair.
It’s hard for me to write this news with praise considering I despise everything Me Before You represents. The adaptation of Jojo Moyes’ popular novel about a paralyzed young man (played by Sam Claflin) and his caretaker ( Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke) had a bumpy road upon release with disabled rights group seeing the film as ableist. and MGM announced their weepy romantic drama Me Before You crossed the $200 million dollar mark on a budget of $20 million. According to Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros. A purple world-eating Oscar Isaac, the umpteenth remake of a biblical epic and an alien invasion so bad Will Smith jumped ship for a subpar comic book movie…I’m ready to say sayonara Summer 2016.īut that’s not to say a light isn’t shining at the end of the tunnel. Look at your local cinema over the last few months and you’ve probably come to the realization that this summer was a bust.
